7½ Ways to Kick Start Your Copywriting Career in 2009

Hiya CopyStar,

I love the new year for a bunch of reasons - but one of them is because January 1, 1999 was my "Independence Day"!

That was the day I officially cut the umbilical cord to my 9-to-5 job in the corporate world and launched my freedom and new career as a freelance copywriter!

Woo hoo! And I celebrate that liberation EVERY DAY!

But I gotta tell ya - I was scared to death!

After all, I was making a comfortable 6-figure salary and those paychecks came every 2 weeks - whether I really "worked" or not!

So heck yeah, I was scared to take the leap. Thank goodness I had the support of my husband. Mick said, "Hey, we started off in a one bedroom roach-infested basement apartment in Hyattsville, MD and we were happy - so we can always go back to it if we need to."

Truth is, I didn't want to go back - especially since we now have 4 children. That one bedroom apartment would be pretty darn tight with 6 of us!

But I understood Mick's point loud and clear. If I wasn't happy at my job then I needed to find one that made me happy and worked

with our personal and family goals! The "stuff" doesn't really matter.

So after taking a few months to plan out my exit strategy from the corporate world - I jumped - head first!

You know the first thing I learned?

NOBODY works on New Year's Day!

I was gung ho - but I had to wait until January 2nd to call contacts and get this freelance ball rolling. Ok, so day one wasn't too productive. But it didn't take me long to recognize a powerful lesson:

My new 4-hour day was equal to my old 8-hour day at the corporate office! Here's why:

  • No more wasted hours sitting in long meetings!
  • No office politics!
  • No interruptions from co-workers who just want to update me on their love life!
  • No coffee breaks that easily zapped 10...20...even 30 minutes of my day-and I didn't even drink coffee!

In other words, I become more productive in less time! Plus, I didn't have to share my success - or failure with "the team". If I wrote copy that kicked butt - everyone knew it was me. And if my copy sucked - well then, everybody and their MOTHER knew it was me too! I loved that accountability!

Now, 10 years later, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt - freelancing was the BEST decision I made. That's when I got FREEDOM to...

... Live life on my terms!

... Work with people I really like and respect - and fire those I don't!

... Take vacations and days off whenever I wanna!

... Work crazy hours that fit my creative cycle. Hey, at 5:00 a.m. I'm at the PEAK of my creativity!

... Wear whatever I want to the office. (Yes, I have a strict dress code - I must wear clothes. After that, everything is optional!)

... Goof off - and write issues of CopyStar whenever I feel like it!

So what about you, CopyStar?

Are you still straddling the fence?

Still not sure you can make the plunge into freelancing? Let me ask you the same question I asked myself 10 years ago:

What do you really have to lose?

If you tried freelancing and it didn't work out - do you think you will NEVER find another job?  If freelancing is really what you want to to do - isn't it better to try and fail then never to try at all?

If not now, when?

I know you're scared - and that's GOOD. Fear is a great motivator. I fear those roaches in that one bedroom apartment so I'm making sure I never have to live with them again!

So if freelancing is what you really want to do - then put together a doable plan... talk it over with your family... pray about it... and DO it!

Here are 7 ½ ways you can kick start your copywriting career in 2009:

#1: Get a website! Don't do like I did and wait 9 years before creating a presence on the web - do it from the get go! Nobody needs to know you're a newbie! Let the internet bring clients to you! Get a simple and affordable 3-page website. Let your prospects know who you are... what you specialize in... and how you can help them make more moolah. Put up samples - if you have them. Need a webmaster? You can borrow mine: Lynnette Taylor created my website in record time - and she's affordable and great to work with! Tell her you're a CopyStar reader and I told you she will give you her BEST price. Contact her at: lynnette@taylormadesolutions-4u.com

#2: Create a support system! The truth is: If your spouse isn't supportive of your freelancing goals - you're going to have a hard time succeeding! I know I would've. Talk your plans out with your mate to make him/her feel more comfortable with your goals. Also, have friends you can count on to cheer you up. You'll need them!

#3: Set a realistic budget! How much do you REALLY need to live on? Create a "worst case scenario" barebones budget that says "If I can make just $x as a freelancer, I can take care of my basic needs. Have at least 6 months of living expense in your savings account. That way you won't stress out when the phone isn't flying off the handle those first few months.

#4: Reduce your overhead! Before you take that leap - get rid of as many bills as possible. Can you pay off your car - or get a cheaper one? Get your credit card bills under control. Now this may sound contrary to what I've just said but it's true: Make any necessary major purchases now. Why? Because it will take about 2 years of showing steady income as a freelancer before lenders will view you as a legitimate risk. They don't look too kindly on freelancing as a "real job".

#5: Get ONE client! Don't succumb to the pressure of thinking you have to have several clients. Just get one! And do you know the BEST place you can find that first client? It's your current employer! Can you do the same job for him as a freelancer? Don't be afraid to think outside the box and come up with some great scenarios that may interest your current boss!

#6: Trust yourself! You obviously think you have what it takes to freelance or you wouldn't be thinking about it. You better start believing in yourself now - you're going to need it when you get rejections down the road - and we all get 'em!

#7: Set your "Independence Day"! Remember, a goal without a plan ain't nothing but a dream! Pick a reasonable date when you're going to go for it. And when that day comes - JUMP!

#7 ½: Keep reading CopyStar. I've got LOTS to share with you about being a successful copywriter! Now that my website is up and going (Thanks, Lynnette!) - I get a flood of emails from folks from all over the country looking for writers. And I've decided to let YOU know about these copywriting opportunities too, CopyStar!

For example... here's a job copywriter agent Kevin Finn asked me to help him fill. It's not a freelance job - but it's a heck of a copywriting opportunity for someone - maybe that someone is you:

Dear Carline,

Can you help me?  My client in Salt Lake City is looking for a mid-level copywriter to work full-time in-house in their offices in Salt Lake City.

The client is great to work for, and will start the copywriter out at $60,000/year.

The last copywriter I brought to this client three years ago is earning more than $120,000/year now.

Do you know a copywriter who might be interested in relocating to Salt Lake City for a great opportunity?

Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks Carline.

Best,
Kevin

P.S. Here below is a week in the life of the copywriter at this writing position:

The copywriter will be part of brainstorming discussions where we, as a team, will come up with a new angle for a campaign and work everyone's input to get it down to the basic idea of the hook, headline and offer.

Prior to the meeting, everyone will have studied the guru, the product, and other campaigns currently running.  The meeting will start with an overview of the media placement of the offer and the type of lead that needs to be generated.

After the brainstorming, the copywriter will then start working on headlines and alternate versions of headlines along with deck and intro body copy.

Once the headline or headlines are chosen, the copywriter will write the full landing page in a way that engages the reader from one sentence to the next, through the product outline, the close and engage the reader to enter their information and begin the buying process.

At the same time, the copywriter and the graphic designer will talk with one another to create direction for the designer to begin working.

The writer will also create copy for the order page to help the reader complete their purchase.  The purchase will be between $20-40 and usually includes an online home study course (download) on wealth creation or debt elimination from gurus such as John Cummuta, Robert Allen, Donald Trump, and David Bach.  In some cases, the product will be a physical product that is mailed to the reader.

In the middle of this project, the copywriter will receive small requests for subject or from lines for a different campaign or may be pulled into a meeting to brainstorm a different campaign to be worked on next week.  /font>

The copywriter may also need to take a few hours from the project to write copy for some new email or banner ads.

Once the writer has completed the landing and order page, he/she will work with the designer to deliver a page to the programmer. font>

The programmer will put the page together and then the copywriter will work with the programmer to highlight and treat the copy to ensure optimal engagement of the reader.

As the pages are being programmed, the writer and designer will work together to create email and banner ads to drive traffic to the landing page.

The writer will also incorporate in his work the use of effective marketing practices within the guidelines of the legal department.  When the pages are done, the writer will provide the pages to the legal team for internal review and the partner team for the guru to approve.  Several iterations may be necessary.  The copywriter will need to be creative while still remaining legally compliant.
